Before changing anything
Record:
- Device and operating system
- Game and selected game region
- VPN endpoint
- Protocol
- In-game ping, jitter, and packet loss
- Whether Ethernet or Wi-Fi is in use
- Whether the problem exists without the VPN
Check the game’s status page and your VPN provider’s status or support channel. Then update the VPN app from the provider’s official source.
Problem 1: Ping is higher with the VPN
This is normal when the direct route is healthy.
Try, in order:
- Select the closest endpoint from your current provider.
- Test one endpoint near the game server.
- Switch to WireGuard.
- Disable multi-hop and obfuscation.
- Use Ethernet.
- Compare several matches in the same game region.
If direct remains better, disconnect the VPN for that game or use split tunneling. A provider should not ask you to preserve its feelings at the expense of your match.

Problem 2: Ping spikes or packet loss appears
First ping the router without and with the VPN. Loss to the router is local and not caused by the remote VPN server.
Then:
- Pause household uploads and downloads.
- Try Ethernet.
- Change to another nearby endpoint.
- Switch between WireGuard, IKEv2, and OpenVPN UDP.
- Disable conflicting traffic-shaping or “optimizer” apps.
- Test at another time of day.
If loss only appears through every VPN endpoint, contact your VPN provider’s support team with logs, times, protocols, and results.
Problem 3: The VPN disconnects during matches
- Update the app and network driver.
- Turn off aggressive battery optimization on mobile.
- Allow the VPN app through local security software.
- Try IKEv2 on a phone that changes between Wi-Fi and cellular.
- Try OpenVPN TCP only if the network blocks UDP.
- Test another endpoint.
- Check whether the router’s idle timeout or Wi-Fi power saving drops the connection.
Keep the kill switch enabled if falling back to the normal IP would be a problem. Expect the game to disconnect when the switch blocks traffic.
Problem 4: The game or launcher will not sign in
Some services block shared VPN IPs or react to a sudden location change.
- Confirm the publisher has no outage.
- Choose a nearby endpoint in your normal country.
- Restart the launcher after connecting.
- Keep system date and time automatic.
- Disable custom DNS and use your provider’s default.
- Try a different endpoint.
- Use split tunneling only if permitted and necessary.
Do not jump through five countries in five minutes. Account security systems notice behavior that looks like the world’s fastest holiday.
Problem 5: NAT becomes strict
VPNs and connection sharing add network-address translation. Peer-to-peer games and voice chat may suffer.
Try:
- Another endpoint
- Router setup instead of PC sharing
- Removing an unnecessary second router
- UPnP on your own trusted router
- Split tunneling for the affected game
- Asking support about endpoint NAT behavior
Avoid placing the whole device in a DMZ as the first fix. Port forwarding through a VPN only works if the provider supports it and the game can use that arrangement.
Problem 6: Downloads become slow
- Use WireGuard and a nearby endpoint.
- Test outside peak hours.
- Check CPU use on an older router.
- Disable multi-hop and obfuscation.
- Compare the VPN endpoint with Steam or launcher download-server selection.
- Pause other traffic.
Gaming needs modest bandwidth once connected; updates do not. A router can handle a match and still choke on a 100 GB download through OpenVPN.
Problem 7: DNS fails or leaks
Symptoms include websites not loading, launchers failing to resolve services, or DNS tests showing the ISP resolver.
- Return DNS to automatic in the device.
- Reconnect LagZero.
- Remove stale custom resolvers.
- Disable another VPN or DNS-filtering app.
- Flush the local DNS cache.
- Re-import the current router profile from your provider.
On Windows:
ipconfig /flushdns
A DNS leak is a privacy concern. It is not normally the reason your in-game bullets arrive late.
Problem 8: Some sites work, but games hang
This can indicate an MTU or blocked-UDP issue.
- Try another protocol.
- Ask support for the recommended MTU.
- Lower MTU gradually only if instructed and record the original.
- Test on another network.
- Disable obfuscation if it is not needed.
Do not adopt a universal MTU from a social post. Tunnels and paths differ.
Problem 9: Split tunneling does not work
Games often use multiple executables: launcher, anti-cheat, game client, crash handler, and voice service.
Add the complete set to the same routing rule. Restart the launcher and VPN after changing it. If traffic still splits unpredictably, return to the full tunnel and contact support.
Follow all anti-cheat rules. Split tunneling is a routing tool, not a way to manipulate the client.
Problem 10: Console shows the normal IP
The console is bypassing the tunnel.
- Verify router policy routing includes the console.
- Confirm Windows/macOS shares the VPN adapter, not the ordinary adapter.
- Reconnect after enabling sharing.
- Check the public IP from the console or router.

Problem 11: Hotel or school Wi-Fi blocks the VPN
Complete the captive portal with the VPN off. Then test WireGuard, IKEv2, OpenVPN UDP, and finally OpenVPN TCP. Use obfuscation only when available, permitted, and needed.

Problem 12: The VPN app says connected, but nothing routes
- Disconnect and quit the app fully.
- Toggle the network adapter.
- Reboot the device.
- Remove another VPN client.
- Check system proxy settings.
- Reset the network stack if local settings are corrupted.
- Reinstall the official app after preserving logs.
Send support the app version, OS version, protocol, endpoint, time, and logs. “It doesn’t work” makes a support agent play twenty questions; useful details let them skip to the boss fight.

FAQ
Why does a VPN make my ping worse?
It adds a server and often more distance to the route. A nearby endpoint and WireGuard minimize overhead, but a healthy direct route may remain faster.
Which protocol should I try first?
WireGuard. Use IKEv2 or OpenVPN UDP as fallbacks, and OpenVPN TCP on restrictive networks where UDP fails.
Why does the game work without the VPN only?
The service may block the selected shared IP, NAT may be too restrictive, DNS may fail, or the network may block the protocol. Test another nearby endpoint and protocol.
Should I leave the kill switch on?
Leave it on when preventing unprotected fallback matters. Understand that it will intentionally cut internet access if the tunnel drops.
