Packet loss means some data never reaches its destination. In Valorant, that can look like skipped movement, delayed shots, rubber-banding, or network warnings.
The useful question is not “which secret setting fixes loss?” It is “where do the packets start disappearing?”
Confirm the symptom in Valorant
Enable network statistics for packet loss, network round-trip time, and jitter if available in the current client. Record whether the game reports incoming loss, outgoing loss, or both.
Also check Riot Games Service Status. If a region is having trouble, your router does not need an exorcism.
1. Test over Ethernet
Connect the PC directly to the router and play the same mode.
If loss disappears, focus on Wi-Fi:
- Use 5 GHz or 6 GHz near the access point.
- Change to a cleaner channel.
- Remove repeaters from the route.
- Update the Wi-Fi adapter driver.
- Disable power-saving for the adapter during a test.
- Move the router into the open.
Do not continue to ISP troubleshooting while the first wireless hop is dropping packets.
2. Ping the router
Find the default gateway with ipconfig in Windows Command Prompt. Then run:
ping -n 200 YOUR_GATEWAY_IP
Example:
ping -n 200 192.168.1.1
Expected local latency is low and stable. Any repeatable loss to the router points to the PC, cable, Wi-Fi, router, or local interference.
If Ethernet also loses packets to the router, replace the cable, try another router port, update the network driver, and reboot the equipment.
3. Test beyond the router
Run a longer ping to a stable public destination:
ping -n 200 1.1.1.1
A clean router ping with loss to the public target suggests trouble beyond the local network. It could be the modem, ISP access link, congestion, or upstream routing.
A public target is not a Valorant server, so this test shows general path health rather than the exact game route.
4. Stop upstream saturation
Outgoing packet loss and huge ping spikes often appear when uploads fill the connection.
Pause:
- Cloud backup
- Video calls
- Live streams
- Security-camera upload
- File sharing
- Game and system updates
Then check latency under load. Enable smart queue management on the router if available. Proper queue control often beats a larger bandwidth plan for household gaming.
5. Update and reset the Windows network stack
Install the latest stable Ethernet or Wi-Fi driver from the device or motherboard manufacturer.
If the adapter behaves strangely, open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
Restart Windows afterward.
These commands reset local networking state. They do not fix ISP packet loss or Riot servers, so use them after the local tests point toward the PC.
6. Check firewall and security software
Temporarily test with third-party network filters, “gaming optimizers,” traffic shapers, and overlays disabled. Keep the normal Windows firewall active unless Riot support directs otherwise.
Do not run Valorant and Vanguard through untrusted tunneling or packet-manipulation software. Follow Riot’s current anti-cheat rules.
7. Compare times and Riot regions
Record packet loss at several times for three days. If the connection is clean in the afternoon and bad every evening, investigate local traffic and ISP congestion.
Use Valorant’s normal server selection and compare nearby official servers. Choose the stable nearby option. A far server increases latency and does not solve local loss.
8. Test a VPN route
A VPN becomes useful when:
- The router and local network test clean.
- General internet is stable.
- Loss affects the route toward Riot.
- A nearby VPN endpoint has a different upstream path.
Test fairly:
- Play 10 minutes without the VPN.
- Record ping, jitter, incoming loss, and outgoing loss.
- Connect a reputable VPN with WireGuard to a nearby endpoint.
- Keep the same Valorant server.
- Repeat immediately.
- Alternate the test order on another day.
If loss repeatedly falls, the direct route may be the issue. If ping rises and loss remains zero either way, the direct route is better.

9. Collect evidence for your ISP
Save:
- Wired router-ping result
- Public-ping result
- Dates and times
- Latency-under-load results
- Valorant’s incoming and outgoing loss
- Direct and VPN comparisons
- Whether other games are affected
Ask the ISP to investigate packet loss or congestion on the access network. Riot support may also request logs through its official repair or support tools.
What not to do
- Do not assume every traceroute asterisk is loss.
- Do not change ten variables at once.
- Do not trust a one-minute test.
- Do not expect DNS to repair packets already in transit.
- Do not use location changes to seek a competitive advantage.
FAQ
Is 1% packet loss bad in Valorant?
Any sustained loss can cause visible problems in a fast shooter. Confirm it across a longer sample because a brief display spike may not represent the full match.
Why do I have incoming but not outgoing loss?
The two directions can use different queues and paths. Incoming loss suggests packets toward your PC are being dropped; outgoing loss concerns traffic leaving it. Local Wi-Fi can affect both.
Can a VPN fix packet loss?
It can bypass a poor upstream route. It cannot fix packets lost between your PC and router or create capacity on a generally congested access link.
Does DNS affect packet loss?
Not usually during a live match. DNS resolves names; it does not carry most of the game session.
