Getting high ping while streaming usually means the stream has changed either your upload load or your PC workload. The annoying part is that both can make a match feel like it is being delivered by carrier pigeon.
Do not start by buying more download speed. A stream sends video out of your home, so upload capacity and queue behavior matter first. Run a short off-versus-on comparison, identify whether network latency or frame time changes, then adjust one variable. Your router does not award bonus points for changing twelve settings at once.
Confirm that the ping rises, not just the frame time
Turn on the game’s ping, packet-loss, FPS, and frame-time displays if available. In OBS Studio, open View > Stats and watch the network, rendering, and encoding counters while reproducing the problem.
Run the same practice area or low-stakes match for five minutes in each state:
- Game running with OBS closed.
- OBS open with no stream or recording active.
- Stream active at your normal settings.
- Stream active at a lower bitrate and resolution.
Record the game’s ping, packet loss, FPS, frame time, OBS dropped frames, and the time of each spike.

OBS describes network dropped frames as a connection problem between the computer and streaming service, while rendering or encoding lag points toward local processing. Those counters help classify the failure. They do not identify the guilty cable, queue, or upstream hop by themselves.
If voice chat rather than a full broadcast triggers the issue, use the separate Discord game-lag test. It isolates voice, overlay, screen-share, and PC-resource causes.
Measure the upload queue while the stream is live
A speed test taken with the stream off does not reproduce the loaded connection. Test while the problem is happening.
On Windows, run ipconfig in Command Prompt and find the Default Gateway for the active adapter. Open one Command Prompt for the router:
ping -t YOUR_GATEWAY_IP
A common example is:

Open a second window for a public comparison target:
ping -t 1.1.1.1
Cloudflare lists 1.1.1.1 as a public resolver address. It is not your game server or streaming ingest server. It is simply a stable comparison point. Microsoft documents ping as a reachability and round-trip-time test.
Collect one minute with the stream off, then one minute with it on. Stop each command with Ctrl+C and compare the results.
- Router ping rises first: inspect Wi-Fi, the network adapter, local traffic, and the router.
- Router ping stays steady but public ping rises: the upload queue, modem, ISP access link, or wider route moves higher on the list.
- Both pings stay steady while the game rises: the game destination or route may differ from the public target.
- The pattern repeats at regular intervals even with no stream: use the repeating ping-spike checklist.
Some routers limit replies to diagnostic traffic, so match spikes to the actual game symptom. One slow reply is gossip. A repeatable off-versus-on change is evidence.
Reduce upload demand before touching advanced settings
Start with the stream itself. OBS recommends lowering bitrate as one response to connection trouble. Twitch publishes current broadcasting guidance, but the correct setting still depends on the connection, resolution, frame rate, encoder, and channel options available to the account.
For a controlled test:
- Save the current OBS profile or write down every changed value.
- Lower bitrate by a meaningful step.
- If needed, lower output resolution or frame rate.
- Keep the game, server region, scene, and test duration similar.
- Compare game ping and OBS counters again.
Also pause cloud backup, photo sync, file uploads, security-camera uploads, torrents, and any second livestream. Ask other people on the network to avoid large uploads for one test window. If the ping improves only when competing traffic stops, the connection was likely queuing more outbound traffic than it could send promptly.
The IETF recommends active queue management to control persistent queues and reduce delay. A router with well-implemented smart queue management or QoS may help when configured for the real connection rate. It cannot create upload capacity. Use the router maker’s current instructions, save the old settings, and compare enabled versus disabled. “Gaming mode” is not a measurement unit.
Check Wi-Fi and the wired baseline
Streaming adds sustained outbound traffic, which can expose a wireless link that seemed fine during lighter use. Plug the PC directly into the main router with a known-good network cable and repeat the same stream test.
If the wired result is cleaner:
- move closer to the main router;
- bypass repeaters and powerline adapters;
- compare the available Wi-Fi bands from the same location;
- update the wireless adapter driver from the device maker;
- reposition the router in an open, elevated location;
- test one channel or band change at a time.
If the router ping also spikes over a network cable, continue with the high-ping-on-Ethernet checks for the cable, adapter, router port, household traffic, and modem path.
Do not treat DNS as an upload-queue fix. DNS helps the app find an address. It does not empty a full upstream queue during an established stream. Port forwarding also does not create bandwidth or repair packet loss.
Decide whether a VPN test is relevant
A VPN is not the first tool for high ping during streaming. It cannot reduce encoder load, repair Wi-Fi, or make a saturated upload larger. It also adds another server and can increase latency.
After the router ping stays stable, upload headroom exists, and OBS shows no local processing problem, a nearby VPN endpoint can be tested as a route comparison. Keep the direct connection if it performs better. The troubleshooting goal is a stable stream and match, not making every packet take the scenic route for branding purposes.

Why does my ping go up when I start streaming?
Streaming adds continuous upload traffic. If that traffic fills the available upstream capacity or a router queue, game packets may wait longer. How much upload speed do I need to stream and game?
There is no universal number. The stream bitrate, platform overhead, other household uploads, connection stability, and router behavior all matter. Leave headroom instead of setting the stream to consume the full measured upload rate, then verify under a real stream load.
Will lowering OBS bitrate reduce game ping?
It may help when stream traffic is filling the upload or building a persistent queue. It will not fix weak Wi-Fi, an overloaded encoder, a bad game route, or an ISP outage. Lower bitrate once, repeat the same test, and keep the better measured result.
Can a gaming VPN fix high ping while streaming?
Only in the narrower case where the local connection has headroom and a different upstream route behaves better. A VPN cannot fix upload saturation, local wireless loss, router queues, or rendering lag, and it may add latency.
