Repeated ping spikes usually point to a repeating local event: Wi-Fi interference or scanning, an upload queue filling, background synchronization, adapter power management, or another device waking up. Run continuous pings to your gateway and a public IP at the same time, then isolate Ethernet, network load, and one device at a time. The first test that stops the rhythm identifies the layer, not necessarily the exact culprit.

One match is smooth. The next has a tiny freeze every ten seconds, as if your connection hired a metronome with malicious intent.
When you get ping spikes every few seconds, the repeating interval is useful evidence. It often suggests a scheduled event, Wi-Fi behavior, a background upload, device power management, queue buildup, or software polling, rather than permanently slow internet. “Often” is doing important work there. The timing is a clue, not a confession.
Find where the spike first appears before replacing the router or changing advanced settings.
Confirm that the spike is network latency
A short freeze can come from the network, the game server, or the gaming device. Turn on the game’s network and performance statistics if available, then watch ping and FPS together.
- Ping jumps while FPS stays steady: investigate the network.
- FPS or frame time jumps while ping stays steady: investigate rendering, heat, drivers, storage, or background CPU load.
- Only one game spikes: check that publisher’s official service status and selected server region.
- Every game and voice chat spike together: the local network, connection load, or upstream path becomes more likely.
Record the interval. Does it happen roughly every five, ten, thirty, or sixty seconds? A repeatable cadence is easier to isolate than “the vibes became unplayable around dinner.”
If the issue is constant high latency rather than a repeating jump, start with high ping in games but good internet. If the game reports missing packets, use the separate packet-loss diagnostic.
Run two continuous pings at the same time
On Windows, open Command Prompt and run ipconfig. Find the Default Gateway address. It is commonly something like 192.168.1.1, but use the address your PC actually shows.
Open two Command Prompt windows. In the first, test the gateway:
ping -t YOUR_GATEWAY_IP
In the second, test a public IP:
ping -t 1.1.1.1
Play until the symptom happens. Press Ctrl+C in each window to stop and show the summary. Microsoft documents ping as a connectivity and reachability tool; the -t option continues until interrupted.
On macOS or Linux, use ping YOUR_GATEWAY_IP and ping 1.1.1.1 in separate Terminal windows, then stop each with Control+C.
Interpret the pair, not one dramatic line:

ICMP replies are not sacred. A router can answer ping slowly while forwarding game traffic normally. Look for a repeated pattern that lines up with the visible problem.
If the gateway spikes, compare Ethernet and Wi-Fi
Connect the gaming device directly to the main router with a known-good Ethernet cable. Keep the same game, server region, and approximate test duration.
If the pattern disappears, the internet beyond the router did not magically heal. The Wi-Fi path changed. Test these one at a time:
- Move closer to the main access point.
- Avoid a wireless repeater for one session.
- Try 5 GHz or 6 GHz at short range; try 2.4 GHz when distance or walls are the problem.
- Move the router into the open and away from dense obstructions.
- Update the Wi-Fi adapter driver from the PC or adapter manufacturer.
- Temporarily disable adapter power saving, record the result, then restore it if nothing changes.
Windows can create a wireless network report with:
netsh wlan show wlanreport
The report includes Wi-Fi sessions, disconnect reasons, adapter details, and related events. It can show whether the spike lines up with reconnects or adapter trouble, but it cannot assign every latency jump to Wi-Fi.
On a Mac, Apple’s Wireless Diagnostics can analyze the connection and save a diagnostics archive. Run it while joined to the affected network; follow Apple’s current instructions rather than downloading a mystery “Wi-Fi optimizer.”
If both pings spike, stop background traffic
Cloud backups, photo sync, livestreams, video calls, security cameras, file sharing, and game updates can fill a queue. Packets wait behind the transfer, raising latency while the connection remains online.
Pause all avoidable traffic on the gaming device. Then temporarily disconnect or idle other household devices and repeat the same test. Add them back in groups until the rhythm returns.
Windows Task Manager can show network activity by process. On consoles, fully pause downloads. Also check launchers, operating-system updates, backup clients, and media tabs.
If ping spikes while gaming appear only when the connection is busy, test the router’s smart queue management or well-implemented QoS feature if it has one. Configure it conservatively and keep before-and-after results. The IETF recommends active queue management to control persistent queues, but a router checkbox cannot create bandwidth your connection does not have.

Hunt the repeating process without changing everything
A regular interval can come from software checking, syncing, scanning, or waking on a schedule. Use a clean comparison sequence:
- Reboot the PC and router once.
- Test before opening launchers, chat apps, browsers, or overlays.
- Close one background app at a time.
- Disable unused virtual adapters for one test.
- Repeat long enough to catch at least five expected spikes.
Do not uninstall security software, disable the firewall permanently, or download a “ping fixer.” If one app appears responsible, update it, pause its sync or overlay feature, and retest.
For Windows Wi-Fi, compare the spike timestamps with the wireless report. For Ethernet, try a second cable and router port, then another wired device. One affected PC points toward its adapter, driver, filters, or software. Multiple wired devices spiking together move suspicion toward the router, modem, connection load, or ISP.
If the gateway is clean, collect ISP-grade evidence
When the local gateway remains stable but the public ping and game spike together, record:
- exact local dates and times;
- Ethernet or Wi-Fi;
- gateway and public ping results;
- affected games and devices;
- whether the connection was idle or busy;
- modem or router event logs, if safely accessible;
- whether an official outage was active.
Repeat on two or three days. Reboot the modem or gateway once and inspect accessible indoor cables for loose connections. Do not open provider equipment or touch outdoor lines.
Xbox’s detailed network statistics can provide latency and packet-loss context on the console. Other platforms and games may expose similar readings. Send the ISP a pattern such as “three wired devices jump from 24 ms to 280 ms every evening between 8:00 and 9:00” rather than “internet bad, please deploy wizard.”
Test a VPN route only after the local path is clean
A VPN cannot repair Wi-Fi interference, adapter power behavior, a full upload queue, or a struggling game server. It can sometimes change an unstable upstream route; it can also add latency.
For a controlled comparison, choose a nearby VPN endpoint, keep the game region fixed, and record ten minutes direct versus ten minutes tunneled. Reverse the order another day. Keep the VPN only if the repeating spike improves consistently, not because one unusually peaceful lobby felt spiritually significant.

Fixes that usually waste time
- Changing DNS: DNS helps find an address; it usually does not control latency after a match is connected.
- Opening random ports: port forwarding does not fix interference, queue buildup, or an unstable route.
- Buying a faster plan immediately: more capacity may help saturation, but it does not automatically repair Wi-Fi or routing.
- Changing MTU blindly: an incorrect value can create a new problem while hiding the original one.
- Applying every tweak at once: you lose the evidence that identifies what worked.
FAQ
Why does my ping spike every ten seconds?
A regular interval suggests a repeating event such as Wi-Fi behavior, background synchronization, device power management, software polling, or queued traffic. Run simultaneous gateway and public pings, then remove one variable at a time. The interval alone cannot identify the exact process.
Can Wi-Fi cause ping spikes every few seconds?

Why do I get random ping spikes on Ethernet?

Will changing DNS fix lag spikes every few seconds?
Usually not. DNS resolves names before or around connection setup. It generally does not change the path of established game traffic. Test the gateway, network load, and route before changing DNS.
Can a gaming VPN stop repeating ping spikes?
Only in the narrower case where the tunnel replaces a poor upstream route. It cannot fix a local Wi-Fi or queueing problem and may increase latency. Compare repeated direct and VPN sessions after proving the gateway is stable.
