When games keep disconnecting but internet is fine, a brief failure may be too short for browsing or chat to reveal, or it may affect only the game session. Check service status, test over a network cable, run simultaneous pings to the router and a public target, inspect the Windows wireless report, pause uploads and traffic filters, then compare routes.

When games keep disconnecting but internet is fine, the connection is not necessarily fine. It is fine enough for the apps still on screen. A short interruption can end a live match while a web page quietly retries, and one game can lose its session while another destination remains reachable.
That does not automatically convict your ISP, router, game, or the neighbor’s suspiciously timed cloud backup. The useful question is simpler: where does the first repeatable failure appear?
Confirm what actually disconnects
Write down the exact time of three disconnects. Include the game, mode, server region, device, connection type, and any error code. Then classify the scope:
- One match only: suspect that server or a one-off session failure.
- One game across several matches: check its service, files, security conflicts, and route.
- Every online game on one device: inspect that device, adapter, cable, and software.
- Every device at home: inspect the router, modem, ISP access, and household load.
- Wi-Fi drops entirely: treat it as a local wireless problem first.
Check the game’s official status page and your platform status page at the recorded time. If many players report the same incident, stop performing router rituals. Save the error and wait for the service team.
Discord staying connected is useful evidence, not a royal pardon for the network. Different apps can use different destinations and recover differently. If just one title fails, use the more focused packet loss in one game guide after the tests below.
Run two pings while the game is open
On a Windows PC connected to the same router, open Command Prompt and run ipconfig. Find Default Gateway, then start a longer test to that router address:
ping -t YOUR_GATEWAY_IP
A common example is:
ping -t 192.168.1.1
Open a second Command Prompt and run:
ping -t 1.1.1.1
Microsoft documents ping as an ICMP reachability and round-trip test. Cloudflare lists 1.1.1.1 as a public resolver address. It is a convenient comparison target, not your game server.
Keep both windows running until the game disconnects, then press Ctrl+C in each. Compare the few seconds around your recorded time:

A clean result does not clear every layer. Games may use traffic and destinations that an ICMP test does not copy. The point is to catch a broad connection failure, not make ping wear a detective hat three sizes too big.

Compare Wi-Fi with a network cable
Plug the PC or console directly into the router with a known-good network cable. Keep the same game, normal nearby region, and similar time of day. Pause downloads, cloud backup, livestreaming, large uploads, and device updates. Test three matches.
If the disconnects stop, focus on the wireless path:
- Move closer to the main router.
- Remove a repeater or powerline adapter from the test path.
- Try the router’s 5 GHz or 6 GHz network when range allows.
- Update the wireless adapter driver from the device or adapter manufacturer.
- Restart the router using its documented procedure.
On Windows, create the built-in wireless report from an administrator Command Prompt:
netsh wlan show wlanreport
Microsoft says the HTML report covers recent Wi-Fi events, sessions, failures, and disconnect reasons. Match its timestamps to your notes. A wireless session ending at the exact second the match dies is much stronger evidence than a speed test taken twenty minutes later.

Remove device and household conflicts
When all games fail on one device but other devices stay stable, test the device layer one change at a time:
- Restart the game, launcher, and device.
- Install current operating-system and network-adapter updates.
- Verify the game files through its launcher.
- Temporarily exit third-party traffic optimizers, web shields, and other VPNs.
- Keep the operating-system firewall enabled unless the publisher gives a specific test.
- Try another cable and router port.
- Compare the same game on another device on the same network.
Do not open a random list of ports from an old forum post. Port forwarding can solve a specific inbound-connectivity problem, but it does not repair Wi-Fi loss, an overloaded upload, or a broken game server. Also skip changing DNS as a universal cure. DNS can affect name lookup and sign-in, but it normally does not carry the live match after the session is established.
If disconnects arrive when someone starts uploading photos, streaming, or downloading a giant update, pause that traffic and repeat the match. A loaded router queue can create delay and loss even while web pages eventually finish. Test the pattern before buying anything.
Check the wider path without blaming one hop
If the router ping stays clean but the public ping fails, restart the modem and router, confirm the cables, and test at different times. Save the timestamps and wired results for your ISP.
Windows pathping can add supporting evidence:
pathping 1.1.1.1
Microsoft explains that pathping sends probes over time and reports latency or loss across intermediate hops. Some routers limit diagnostic replies while forwarding normal traffic, so one lossy middle hop is not proof. Look for repeatable trouble that continues to later hops and reaches the destination.
The public route still is not the game route. If only one game disconnects, provide its support team with match IDs, region, time, platform, error codes, and your wired comparison. That evidence is considerably more useful than “internet bad, pls nerf.”
Test a VPN only as a route comparison
A VPN may change the upstream path between your ISP and the game network. It may help when the direct route is the problem. It cannot repair weak Wi-Fi, a damaged cable, a loaded router, an ISP access outage, or an unhealthy game service.
For a fair comparison, play three matches on the direct connection and three through one nearby VPN endpoint. Keep the device, mode, normal region, and time window similar. Reverse the order on another day. Keep whichever route behaves more consistently, including no VPN.

FAQ
Why do games disconnect while Discord and browsing still work?
The interruption may be brief, limited to the game destination, or handled differently by each app. Browsers can retry requests, and a voice session may use another route. Record exact times and compare the router, a public target, and the game service.
Can bad Wi-Fi disconnect a game without losing internet completely?
Yes. Short wireless loss or sharp delay variation can end a time-sensitive game session while ordinary apps recover or hide the interruption. Compare three matches over a network cable and inspect the Windows wireless report before changing wider internet settings.
Will changing DNS stop game disconnects?
Usually not when the disconnect happens during a match. DNS helps the client find a service address. It may fix a lookup or sign-in issue, but it does not repair packets lost later between your device and the game server.
Can a VPN stop games from disconnecting?
It may help when a poor upstream route is the cause and the VPN provides a different path. It will not fix local Wi-Fi loss, household congestion, device conflicts, or a failing game server. Compare both routes under similar conditions.
